A Day in the Life Member Exclusive

A Day in the Life: Rachael Samuels, Senior Manager, Social Media at Sprout Social, Inc.

Rachael has worked with Sprout Social as part of the social team for six and a half years and has been in her current Senior Manager role for two years. Having worked in social for a total of 11 years and being a fan from the jump, the decision to join the Sprout Social team was a very natural and meta move.

From engagement to publishing and analytics, to being involved in advocacy, Rachael has several responsibilities in her current role, where she has continued to use the Sprout Social tool to manage socials and teams.

Originally from California, but having lived in Chicago for five years before settling in Portland, ME in March, Rachel is a certified nomad.

Rachael chatted with Talking Influence to let us know what a typical day in her life looks like.

8:00 Each morning I wake up according to my internal alarm clock – usually sometime between eight and nine in the morning. As I spend so much of my day online, the first 90 minutes of my day is phone-free, although if I’m being honest some days I do check my emails and my Sprout inbox on my phone while I’m having breakfast and before I officially log on, to help me prepare mentally. My partner and I are lucky to live within walking distance of several beaches and we’ll often start our day by hiking to one of them.

10:00 Sprout champions everyone to work in a way that suits our individual lifestyles. But I like to be online for when the majority of my colleagues start their day and the hustle begins. Being an hour ahead is a blessing in that regard.

A lot of my day is spent within the Sprout platform. I lean heavily on the smart inbox daily tool to manage our social inbound messages, interact with customers for care or service needs and personalise interactions with our audience. I use our premium analytics and listening tool every day to ensure we understand what’s hot and what’s not across social media.

12:00 My team is everything to me. The best bit of any day or week is coming together and brainstorming creative solutions and tackling a customer’s problem or challenge. This is an exciting and challenging element of my work.  We help people who are going through the exact same thing that my team and I are wrestling with.

13:00 Lunch is typically a frozen burrito. My team can attest that I often bring my lunch to my next meeting, they have definitely all seen me with a frozen burrito!

14:00 At Sprout there’s a huge emphasis on standards and values that are really respected and play into how we work. These values really work to set the tone for how we approach our work, whether that’s solving hard problems and prioritising those first or celebrating change and being able to be agile through constant change – which social media definitely has to do!

15:00 To try and avoid that afternoon slump I jump into my actions list to see what I’ve got left to tick off.  I usually prioritise three or four things a day that if I don’t make progress on, I’ll feel like I haven’t made progress with my day, so this is the time to get to them! Although I do try to be kind to myself and schedule something more creative for this time.

16:00 Despite lots of people thinking they’re a fad, I have a treadmill desk that I use religiously, especially on Wednesdays which are company-wide focus days with no meetings allowed. We’re encouraged to find that focus state and work on particular tasks. A major goal of ours has been to widen our reach and expand our content to new audiences. I’ll use our advocacy tool to curate content for our employee base to share around which has helped in reaching this goal.

17:00 As well as focus days we also have a daily focus hour where it is understood by everyone that the last hour is reserved for finishing tasks rather than starting new ones. Work/life balance is fully baked into our culture and this hour helps us collectively finish on time and have an evening of rest and relaxation.

18:00 After work I love getting outside and into nature. I turn my work phone off and if I am on my phone it’s only for personal TikTok purposes at this point!

20:00 I like to get to bed early, I cannot get to bed late, the same way I have an internal alarm clock that wakes me up, I have an off switch which means that if it’s past 20:30/21:00, my glasses are off and I’m done for the day!

Having found the perfect work-life balance in remote work it’s clear that Rachel’s passion for social media has only blossomed along with the help and support of her trusty Sprout Social tool.
