Instagram closes the IGTV app

In an effort to make video content creation on the app as simple as possible, Instagram has announced that it will be getting rid of its stand-alone IGTV app. The IGTV app was launched in 2018 and presented as a direct competitor to YouTube. Within a year, IGTV content was being heavily promoted on the main Instagram app, citing the fact that the IGTV app did not catch on as successfully as intended.

This, however, does not mean that Instagram is not putting a heavy emphasis on its video content offering as we have seen Meta offer creators up to $35,000 bonuses to post Reels. So the change here is not due to the want for video on Instagram decreasing, but rather the platform aligning itself with new competitors.
