A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life: Irina Shames, SVP of Strategy and Revenue, 3BLACKDOT

Irina Shames has worked in media and entertainment her entire career, driving partnerships, business development and revenue for global conglomerates and innovative startups.

Irina has always been fascinated by the dynamic growth of the gaming ecosystem, and 3BLACKDOT offered her a unique opportunity to bring her collected knowledge in entertainment, and apply it to propel the company’s commercial growth. She has now been at the company for almost two years.

Irina’s role is to grow the company’s commercial footprint. This entails building a robust strategy for the company’s growth while analysing the market trends and matching them with 3BLACKDOT’s capabilities and vision for the future. Since starting at the company, she has built out the commercial team which consists of sales, account management, business development, and creator management.

Irina’s goal is always to be on the lookout for new opportunities. Gaming is an incredibly fast-growing industry – and she believes that we always need to be at the forefront of changes in the space and continue creating opportunities.

Irina chatted to Talking Influence and told us what a typical working day in her life looks like.

7:00-10:00: I’m a voracious reader, so I start my morning by catching up on world news, followed by industry news and updates from my go-to sources. It’s a combo of newsletters, news sources, and social media. It’s my me-time before a flurry of work meetings! 3BLACKDOT is a global company, and part of my job includes calls with our strategic partners in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, which mostly happen first thing in the morning.

10:00-12:00: Usually this time is dedicated to internal team calls, executive meetings, and team catch-ups, as well as emails and slack exchanges on relevant projects. These are great as they set the agenda for the rest of the day and the week to come.

12:00-13:00: I try to stick to the lunch break even in the remote working environment and use the time to catch up on personal stuff, go through emails, and sneak in quick outdoor time.

13:00-16:00: I spend a lot of this time on client and partner calls on the East and West coasts in the afternoons discussing strategic partnership opportunities, finalising negotiations, or opening up new opportunities.

16:00-18:00: This time is usually dedicated to team check-ins to align on projects, their progress, and next steps. We’re all currently operating in a distributed environment, so sometimes end-of-day check-ins turn into early evening virtual team happy hours as well!

18:00-22:00: I’m a big foodie, so I try to go out for dinner and try out new restaurants. LA has such a vibrant restaurant scene! It’s also a great way to catch up with friends. If I cook or order in, I catch up on new shows after dinner, and/or try to read a book.

When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling, exploring LA’s art and restaurant scene, and spending time outdoors; all of the above fuels and inspires my love of all things media, gaming, and business. I enjoy teaching and mentoring, advocate for diversity and representation in the workspace, am on the board of a variety of start-ups, and I also teach a Social Media & Innovation summer course at UCLA.

Working with a global team adds variety to Irina’s working day, and she is able to balance her tasks around her team operating in different time zones. Irina is clearly passionate about her work in the gaming space.
