TikTok doesn’t immediately pop up as a likely book club destination, but it’s rapidly become the go-to place for book fans to unite. As fandoms collide online and across social media, boosted by supporting podcasts, fanfic sites, and self-publishing, a new subculture is booming – BookTok.

Videos with the hashtag #BookTok have amassed a collective 18.1 billion views, at the time of writing. This community of users on TikTok who post videos reviewing and recommending books has caught the attention of publishers, sending old books back to the top of bestseller lists and helping uncover emerging authors to launch their careers.
